Czech Speech Rhythm and the Rhythm Class Hypothesis
نویسندگان
چکیده
While a number of languages have been classified as either syllableor stress-timed, the case of Czech remains unclear. In this paper we make predictions about Czech rhythm on the basis of our analysis of syllable complexity in recorded samples of Czech. The results on syllable complexity show mixed features. This is reflected in the classification of Czech rhythm using rhythm measures based on durational variability of consonantal and vocalic intervals. Rhythm classes and speech perception
This study indirectly tests whether American, Greek and Korean listeners can classify low-pass filtered utterances of English, German, Greek, Italian, Korean and Spanish into rhythm classes, by examining how they rate each utterance’s rhythm in comparison to a series of non-speech trochees. Such classification was difficult for all groups of listeners and did not support the rhythmic classifica...
متن کاملUsing the beat histogram for speech rhythm description and language identification
In this paper we present a novel approach for the description of speech rhythm and the extraction of rhythm-related features for automatic language identification (LID). Previous methods have extracted speech rhythm through the calculation of features based on salient elements of speech such as consonants, vowels and syllables. We present how an automatic rhythm extraction method borrowed from ...
متن کاملBonntempo-corpus and bonntempo-tools: a database for the study of speech rhythm and rate
Work is currently being carried out on a speech database constructed in order to study speech rhythm in connection with speech rate. The database, BonnTempo-Corpus, and the Praat based analysis tools, BonnTempo-Tools, are a powerful instrument for examining various aspects of recently proposed rhythm measures (e.g. %V, ∆C, nPVI, rPVI, etc.) in relation to speech rate among a wide range of langu...
متن کاملAn empirical study of the perception of language rhythm
Linguists have traditionally classified languages into three rhythm classes, namely stress-timed, syllable-timed and mora-timed languages. However, this classification has remained controversial for various reasons: the search for reliable acoustic cues to the different rhythm types has long remained elusive; some languages are claimed to belong to none of the three classes; and no perceptual s...
متن کاملSpeech timing and linguistic rhythm: on the acoustic bases of rhythm typologies.
Research into linguistic rhythm has been dominated by the idea that languages can be classified according to rhythmic templates, amenable to assessment by acoustic measures of vowel and consonant durations. This study tested predictions of two proposals explaining the bases of rhythmic typologies: the Rhythm Class Hypothesis which assumes that the templates arise from an extensive vs a limited ...
